WeWantWorkBoston is engaged in initiatives in the greater Boston area designed to provide opportunities for executives and hiring managers to meet members, and to raise awareness about the Website with our talent pool of highly-qualified members. Watch our home page for new events and register to be informed by e-mail of our activities.
The group is focuses on initiatives in three major strategic areas:
Virtual Consulting Projects
Based on the mix of skills in the group at any given time, WWWB seeks opportunities to engage in high-profile consulting engagements in support of non-profit organizations, government agencies or corporations. These may be pro bono or paid engagements of fairly short-term duration (three months or less). Projects are commonly aimed at filling a strategic or tactical need that an organization has, but has not had the resources to address. WWWB talent may also supplement an organization’s own resources on a specific project. Examples of such projects in 2003 were consulting to the Massachusetts Department of Business and Technology regarding the New Markets Tax Credit program and consulting to the leadership team of the Greater Massachusetts Bay United Way.
Opinion Surveys and Thought Leadership
In a dynamically evolving world of work and careers, WWWB seeks to build intellectual capital around the issues of concern to job seekers, hiring managers, and resource professionals. By executing creative, technology-based surveys on current employment and career topics, and then synthesizing the results and communicating them broadly, WWWB creates greater understanding of the changing career environment and supports our members in their own career development. In 2003, survey projects included a Biotech survey, a Sports Industry survey and a Hiring Practices survey.
Visibility Activities
The group also engages in publicity and public relations activities to raise the image and visibility of the group and its objectives. These activities usually involve group participation in some public forum. In 2003, the group pariticipated in WGBH - TV and WBUR radio fundraisers and attended meetings such as Boston Business Journal and Chamber of Commerce breakfasts.
WWW-B is engaged in a research project focused on understanding issues related to the current hiring practices of organizations in New England. In these tough economic times, matching the most qualified people to critical high-level openings in an efficient and humane fashion has not been easy. The research will benefit HR executives, hiring managers, and job applicants by providing valuable information about the current hiring process. Once the survey is completed, members will meet with senior HR officers to discuss ways to improve the hiring process for all stakeholders.
Biotech is a growing industry with strong appeal to many WWW-B members. Many Biotech firms largely recruit from within their own ranks. To educate this industry about untapped resources in the Boston area, we are conducting a research project to gather information about hiring needs and practices in the biotech industry.
WWW-B allies itself with leading recruitment services providers to promote events for senior hiring executives in the greater Boston area. By using the creativity, energy and contacts of WeWantWorkBoston members, combined with the name recognition and influence of the recruitment service providers, we host engagements for name-draw speakers to talk with senior leaders about employment and economic issues in New England.
WWW-B members give of themselves at all times, notwithstanding their present status. A project is currently underway to consult with the United Way of Greater Massachusetts Bay and share member expertise to advance their strategies through pro-bono consulting.
Members help to execute the charities' activities along with other volunteers, including answering phones at WGBH public television and WBUR public radio fundraisers and by participating in walks, races, rides, etc. as a team or individually.
WWW-B members work with government agencies that can use our skills for bounded, definable projects. One such project relates to organizing a conference that would drive awareness of a government program designed to stimulate economic investment in targeted areas.
This initiative targeted the Sports Industry and its followers, gathering critical information on the effect of the economy on sports attendance via an on-line survey on the WWW-B Website. Results are being compiled and will be distributed to all stakeholders.
